Your In-Flight ChicList

1. Dress to the Destination: Get there set (& styled) to go. What you wear should reflect where you land and take you well beyond baggage claim.

2. Comfort is key and careless is a casualty: Athleisure is for working out, loungewear is for lounging. Neither belongs at 30, 000 feet en route to somewhere fabulous.

3. Functional Is Fashionable: You know you’ll be going through security. You know the connection to Aspen might mean gate-checking your carry-on. Be practical. A little forethought goes a long way. 

4. Consider the Capsule: Every well-dressed wanderluster packs with purpose—and a plan. At the center of that strategy? Pieces that can be reworked into entirely new looks and what you wear on your way there is no exception. Every piece should pull its weight. Chic in transit, and endlessly adaptable on arrival.

The Ski Trip

Of all the trips that warrant a reminder that what you wear to the gym (or the couch) is not airport-appropriate attire, a ski getaway tops the list. While denim is my personal pick for this trip (and most trips), let’s dispel the myth that jeans are the only travel-worthy option. Enter the Ponte pant; the feel of a legging but the polish of a trouser, the Ponte Pant keeps you comfortable, crisp, and compliant with Rule #2: Wear actual clothes.

Jeans or Ponte, either pairs effortlessly with a classic white tee and a cashmere sweater—an easy yet elevated combo. Stick to neutral tones like black and beige for endless looks for all your off-piste plans.

Nothing makes a warmer welcome more essential than landing somewhere cold—and for that, your winter coat is a non-negotiable. Keeping it close is as good a reason (if not better) as any to take full advantage of your carry-on allowance. Fold it up, pack it in, and bring it on (board) to ensure you’re ready to go the moment you land (and covered-literally-in the increasingly common case of a suitcase snafu).

As for your footwear, follow suit and board in your boots. While I usually favor easy-on, easy-off shoes for airport convenience, nothing compromises comfort like cold feet. For ski trips, snow-ready footwear takes precedence over security-friendly slip-ons. With TSA PreCheck, you won’t need to remove them anyway.

The Beach Vacation

Packing for a beach trip? Easy. Dressing for the journey? Not so much. Sundresses and swimwear aren’t exactly airport-appropriate. So, how do you pull off travel style that’s practical, polished, and still follows the rules?

Go light and airy (dress to the destination) and choose an ensemble that earns its keep—at the very least, for the return (consider your capsule).

Lightweight seperates (linen is my favorite) in complimenting neutrals for an airport look that is a propos while still honoring the dress code fitting to your final desination. Pair a khaki, black, white, or navy bottom with a perfect-fit tee or sleeveless button-down, under your favortite “goes-with-everything” layer—jean jacket for me—for the unpredictable in-flight temps. And on my feet? Espadrilles.

Spring and the City

City style calls for sophistication with a signature touch. Two wardrobe essentials for any city look? A great jean and a chic black pant. Either one works for the journey—and for endless styling after. A classic crisp white tee or button down light layer and a daytime flat, like the timeless Chanel cap-toe ballet slippers. Last but not least, a city style essential; the timeless trench—a piece that should be mandatory for any woman old enough to travel on her own.

The Long Haul

While destination-driven dress is still the rule, long-haul flights call for a few thoughtful adjustments. My in-flight goal? Sleep; Sleep—long, hard, and wake just in time for touchdown.

The supporting get-up? A long, lightweight cashmere dress—easy, effortless, soft, and sophisticated. This one-and-done piece offers the comfort of a luxurious robe while presenting as polished and put-together. Layer it with a boyfriend blazer for uncompromised comfort that still feels elevated.

And the shoes… My in-flight footwear strategy involves slipping out of my shoes and into my soft sleep-inducing cashmere slipper socks. And since what goes off must come back on, there are some things to consider (hello, altitude-induced swelling). The solution? The mule—sleek, simple, and perfectly suited for the long haul (and beyond).

A few things I don’t leave home without no matter where I am off to:

My Expandable Longchamp Bag: The perfect carry-all to carry on, this version of the Longchamp Pliage practically doubles in size on demand. Gate checks? No big deal—just expand the bag and use the extra space to relocate your in-flight essentials. And even when your larger bag does makes it onboard, the extra space proves invaluable—fill it, zip it, and slide it “under the seat in front of you” for effortless access throughout the flight.

An Easy-Access & Essentials-Only Secondary Bag: The perfect place for your airport navigation essentials—boarding passes, IDs, phone, and credit card—kept secure, organized, and, if you’re a mom, free from everyone else’s clutter taking over your so called personal item. This was the initial purpose for the Longchamp mentioned and pictured above. A few that are as chic as they are practical and have recently caught my eye:

An Everything-in-One Charger: First, it was different charging cables. Then, different adapter ports? Keeping the charging situation straight at home is hard enough—let alone while traveling. Enter the Charmast Portable Charger: all the cords you need, built right in, to charge all the things. You’re welcome.

Shout Wipes & Wrinkle Spray for stepping out in flawless flyer style. Not all laundry wipes are created equal. Shout Wipes are the only ones I trust. As for wrinkle spray, I have used several brands-whatever is available in travel at the time of purchase-and they have all done the job. #1. RSVP ASAP: Unless you aim to show how little you value the host’s time and effort, RSVP as soon as you know your plans. The deadline is the latest acceptable time—no exceptions, no grey area. RSVP ASAP—end of story.

#3. Gift with Gusto: Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of every host that ever was; presenting flowers upon arrival is a burden not a blessing. Here are some considerations to help guide you when it comes to gifting as a guest and on the right, some suggestions. Click the photo for details.

Do’s & Dont’s

• Don’t show up empty-handed.
• Don’t bring wine for a host who missed his calling as a master sommelier (unless you are one yourself).
• Don’t bring scented candles (scented anything really).
• Don’t bring an unexpected contribution to the evening.
• Do opt for anything that is premium and delicious. Such as artisanal chocolates, exquisite olive oil, or for something a little “extra” caviar (Altima Caviar, of course!).
• Do bring a gift they can use at the next event. Such as wine charms, conversation cards, relevant cocktail napkins, or a wine chiller.
• Do consider something practical — a box of occasion cards is a universal win.

#5. How Can I Help? At an intimate family dinner, clearing the table is a given. But at an event with full-service staff, support your host with a different approach. Think less hands-on, more eyes-open. Your host’s glass is a great place to focus your attention—a quiet drink refill can speak volumes and show you’re attentively present. Most importantly, be friendly and fabulous! Which brings me to my next point…

#6. Connect, Converse, and Comingle: The most gracious guests are masters of mingling! Step out of your comfort zone, socialize beyond your usual circle, and gain gold guest status every time.

#7. #8. Admiration, Not Interrogation: Compliment the décor or art with genuine appreciation, but avoid probing questions. Keep your compliments subtle and always steer clear of inquiries about cost.

#9. Digital Dignity: Remember, you’re in someone’s home. Seek permission before posting, focus on people rather than home décor, get consent before tagging anyone, and skip location tags altogether.

Dining Decorum

#10. Back to the Basics: These are as fundamental as “put your napkin on your lap,” yet are so often overlooked.

• Resist the urge to claim a spot at the table until prompted to do so.
• If it is a seated dinner and there is a self-serve station/buffet situation, hold off on serving yourself until the host gives the signal.
• Wait to start eating until everyone seated at your table is served.

#11. Know Your “Dinner Partner”: When attending a seated dinner with assigned seating, be mindful of your “dinner partner.” Traditionally, the seating alternated between men and women, with men placed to the right of their partners and women to the left. This arrangement guided conversation, with women engaging mainly with the person on their left and men with the person on their right. If you encounter an awkward silence, sticking to this classic seating practice can be a reliable way to navigate the conversation. In Palm Beach, old-world etiquette is always in style!

#12. “Go” with Grace: A simple “excuse me” is all that’s needed when taking a temporary leave from the table. Any more detail is TMI.

Exit Strategies & Actionable Items

#13. Last to Leave, First to Regret: Don’t be “that” guest. Watch for your host’s cues—dimmed lights or soft music signal that it’s time to make your exit. If the host shifts from mingling to tidying up, whether or not there was service staff, you’ve missed the window. Time to join the cleanup crew!

#14. Follow Up with Savoir-Faire: Whether it’s a casual call to the host, also known as your sister, a text to your hostess/best friend, or a handwritten note to anyone else, follow-up is standard, expected, and the only acceptable après-party protocol.

Etiquette is not a mere list of do’s and dont’s. Etiquette, however, is the alignment of respect (due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights, or traditions of others) and consideration (the empathetic practice of showing respect by behaving with due regard for specific circumstances). Let these principles guide you and gracious guest etiquette becomes a given! If that seems daunting, then let’s call it a list after all – one you’ll need to memorize (after which a bit of self-reflection might be in order).

*While etiquette offers universal guidelines for respect and consideration, manners are culturally and situationally dependent expressions. They vary by culture and context. The points listed under “Dining Decorum” are very specific to this part of the world.

More than seventy years later, monsieur Picard’s statement remains relevant; style remains as significant to the ski situation as it was back when every outing was a reason to dress up. Today, fashion’s finest houses are collaborating with some of the world’s most technical performance-wear brands to introduce magnificent mélanges where function and fashion collide.

The Clothes

#1 BOGNER

Bogner and Moncler, founded in 1932 and 1952, respectively, are two brands that have remained at the forefront of ski fashion for decades. Bogner has two main skiwear lines, Bogner Sport’s aesthetic can best be described as a Posh Spice/Sporty Spice mashup. Bogner Fire & Ice is the brand’s younger, louder child that plays with bolder colors and this year, through its collaboration with LoveShackFancy, fresh and floral prints.

Both deliver top-of-the-line performance wear one would expect from the official outfitter of the German ski team.

#2 MONCLER

Have you ever worn a down jacket? Iconic skiwear brand number two on this list, Moncler, invented it, and continues to improve on its original design. Sleek and sophisticated, Moncler Grenoble, the brand’s peak slope-driven performance line delivers functional, high-concept gear that makes for ski-style so chic it will compliment your #streetstyle as any ready-to-wear piece ever could.

#3 FUSALP

Third on the list is Fusalp, another skiwear brand that stands the test of time. Known for top-line tailoring and form-fitting flair, Fusalp has changed the ski fashion game with its creation of the “fuseau” (skin-tight stirrup pant). Couture collaborations such as 2020’s Fusalp x Chloe collection and this year’s Fusalp x Pucci line make for a perfect high fashion/performance apparel pairing for anyone seeking that “the slope is my runway” vibe.

#4 PERFECT MOMENT

For a look that is a little more laid-back but still, 100% luxe, look no further than Perfect Moment. Created in 1979, this brand has taken off over the last five years, and the vintage vibe is fierce, fun and fabulous! In addition to their ski ensembles and one-pieces, I am obsessed with their retro color-blocked graphic ski sweaters. This year Perfect Moment has also joined the collaboration collective and created a 6-piece denim-inspired capsule collection with DL1961.

#5 MACKAGE 

New for me (thank you Kristen) and last on this list is Mackage.  Launched in 1999, this is the baby of the bunch but has all the characteristics of a future icon. High performance, sustainable, modern, and minimal, Mackage skiwear is slick, sleek, subtly sporty, and has my full attention.

These Boots Were Made for Walking

When you look this fabulous on the mountain, transitioning from skiing to all the fun that follows requires nothing more than a ski-boot-to-snow boot swap. My après ski boots are no-name vintage amazingness, my most treasured possession; and hopefully, the only après ski boots I will ever own. I have not even looked at another pair for over a decade and have no idea what’s on this front. Fortunately, @Aspen_Style  has us covered. Thank you, Kristen!

First up on her list is Kristen’s personal snow boot brand of choice, Ulla Johnson. Made of exquisite Italian leather and lined in genuine shearling, Kristen’s boot, the Etna, is a combat boot with just the right touch of femininity.

Next we have Sorel. Sorel’s longstanding reputation for withstanding the elements is why I chose them for my 2-year-old on his first trip to Aspen, and have continued to do so every year since. What I did not know until now (thanks again Kristen) is the brand behind the boots on all the women whose outfits I admired on my last Aspen visit! My personal favorite is the Tofino II boot in Fawn.

Number three on Kristen’s list of snow boot brand recs is Aquatalia.

“They are different and really well made,” she says.

I had no idea! And yet, I cannot say I was surprised. As a longtime fan of Aquatalia shoes, I should have known their commitment to quality would make for a snow boot that not only looks fantastic but offers optimum comfort and prime protection from the elements. The problem here is deciding! I love them all! #YESPLEASE to the Arlo, the  Mya, the Amalia, and the Casandra.

Kristen’s Honorable Mentions:  Cougar also garners her stamp of approval. While any of the skiwear brands mentioned above will undoubtedly deliver fashionable and functional footwear, Kristen also loves Moncler and Mackage.

My Own Honorable Mention:

Realizing  that it had been years since I had seen the distinct outline of a Moon Boot in any snow, I could not help but wonder,

Did the iconic Moon Boot fall off the fashion face of the planet? 

I reached out to one of the best-dressed and even better-traveled skiers I know, who also happens to be a Gstaad local. Turns out, the Moon Boot is not just très au courant in Europe, but it is the boot for jet setters skiing Europe’s most exclusive ski destinations such as Gstaad, St. Moritz, and Courchevel. Good to know this one big step for fashionistas.
